About me and my work ...
I'm working as assistant professor at the Dipartimento Sistemi e Informatica of the University of Florence, and I teach at the Master in Multimedia and at the School of Engineering. My research work is in the field of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, and I mostly work on automatic video analysis, annotation and semantic transcoding. You can find more about my research browsing the list of my papers.
I received the Laurea Degree in Electronics Engineering (Laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica) from the University of Florence in 1999, and Ph.D. in 2004. I'm working in the Media Integration and Communication Center of the University of Florence. From 1999 to 2002 I've worked in the EU IST ASSAVID Project, that dealt with the automatic annotation of sports videos. The other project partners where the University of Surrey, Sony BPU UK, BBC, ACS and IDIAP. From 2004 to 2007 I've worked within the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries, funded by the EU Sixth Framework Programme.
At present I'm working on a new EU research project: VIDI-Video. The goal is to allow semantic access to video content by means of detection of a large number of concepts. The prototypes that will be developed within the project will participate to NIST TRECVID. The other project partners are the University of Amsterdam, the University of Surrey, the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, Stichting Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld & Geluid, Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Computer Vision Center, Fondazione Rinascimento Digitale.
I work also in the another EU project: IM3I. IM3I is a SME project whose objectives are the creation of tools for the accessing and presenting media content to users, offering a natural and transparent way to deal with the complexities of interaction, while hiding them from the user.
The tools are currently being designed according to a SOA paradigm, so that they can be integrated into existing networks, which will support organisations and users in developing their content related services.
My teaching experience includes Unix Fundamentals, Video Editing, CISCO CCNA and XML in the Master on Multimedia of the University of Florence - years 2000 through 2009. I'm currently teaching assistant for Progettazione e Produzione Multimediale (in particular MPEG 1, 2 and 4, XML) and Database Multimediali (in particular MPEG 7) at the School of Engineering. I teach "Laboratorio di Tecnologie dell'Informazione" at the School of Engineering in Firenze and Sistemi di Elaborazione delle informazioni at the School of Medicine (Fisioterapia).
I'm working also for the organization of ACM Multimedia 2010, that will be held in Florence and for the 2010 International Workshop on Multimedia and Semantic Technologies (MUST 2010). The deadline for MUST 2010 is Janaury 22, 2010.
The 2010 International Workshop on Multimedia and Semantic Technologies (MUST'10) - updated
The Workshop on Multimedia and Semantic Technologies (MUST'10) aims at high quality research contributions in multimedia semantic computing, with a focus on how to apply the semantic technologies to the acquisition, generation, storage, processing, and retrieval of large-scale multimedia information. A main goal of MUST is to address emerging research challenges in Semantic Multimedia and to help reducing the Semantic Gap between low-level content descriptions of multimedia and the semantics in high-level human interpretations of audiovisual media.
The deadline has been extended to January 22nd.
Semantic Web and multimedia community researchers are encouraged to join the workshop to benefit from the presentation of results from multimedia based research, which demonstrate important multimedia applications which could be enhanced by Semantic Web technologies. MUST'10 will be held in conjunction with FutureTech 2010, in Busan, Korea, 21-23 May 2010. MUST'10 encourages a multidisciplinary perspective and welcomes papers that address challenges of multimedia in general or in the context of specific domains. Workshop topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
- Advanced Semantic Descriptors and Similarity Metrics for Multimedia
- Advanced Semantic and Content-based Multimedia Analysis
- Machine Learning and Relevance Feedback in Multimedia Analysis and Retrieval
- Ontology Engineering and Ontology-based Multimedia Mining and Retrieval
- Semantic Web technologies and Multimedia
- Semantic-driven Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval
- Semantic-driven Multimedia Personalization and Adaptation
- Interfaces for Web-scale Multimedia Repositories
- Affective/Emotional Interaction or Interfaces in Multimedia Applications
- Applications of Semantic Multimedia in Social and Web-based Environments
- Collective and Swarm Intelligence for Multimedia Applications
- Multimedia and Digital Convergence
- Intelligent Multimedia Services for Future Environments
- Multimedia Security in Future Environments
